Play Therapy
Young children learn, communicate, and process through play. Play therapy utilizes play as the primary means of understanding children and their inner world, communicating with children and hearing what they have to say, and providing them with a safe space to process their experiences and feelings.
Primary goals of play therapy including building a safe space for children, a trusting relationship with the therapist, and allowing them the freedom to be who they are in the therapeutic space, and feel safe enough to express that. When working with young children, this is what I am to do and create in the play therapy space.
I utilize parent sessions and conversations to aid in translating what we learn in play therapy to help understand children, and we also discuss parenting strategies that may be helpful in successfully parenting at home.
